Responsibilities:

The Progress/Open Edge Database Administrator is responsible for the planning and administration of technical and operational activities associated with database systems. Controls activities related to the day-to-day maintenance of database administration functions and ensures high-level support for all database environments. Has frequent interaction with application development staff as a high-level client problem-solver.

  • Participate with the design, development, preparation, and maintenance of databases.

  • Participate in key support issues for one or more production databases.

  • Provide Level 3 type support to SafeKeeperPLUS application and all connecting applications

  • Ensure that backup/recovery environments meet requirements and have correct implementation. Assist in recovery from loss of data caused by user or system error. Ensure backup and disaster recovery procedures are in place and followed.

  • Perform the installation and upgrade of Open Edge Databases and software. Maintain at current release levels and stable implementations.

  • Provide capacity planning, monitoring and reporting as required for short-term and long-term growth.

  • Reorganize database structures as needed. Automate procedures at regular intervals and use tools to maximize performance and efficiency.

  • Ensure data pertaining to the status of problems and service requests is entered into the problem tracking systems accurately and promptly on a daily basis.

  • Provide application database administration and technical support for various database environments (i.e. development, training, demo and testing). Perform environment refreshes on request. Ensure the integrity of production test and quality assurance environments through proper change management procedures.

  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and standards to ensure systems compliance; especially as they apply to security, change management, maintenance, management and access of shared data resources.

  • Ensure performance and tuning analysis, maintain optimal performance levels, and resolve bottlenecks as required.

  • Interact and confer with database vendors and consultants for technical troubleshooting and expanding knowledgebase.

  • Interact with analysts and developers for development projects to understand system configuration requirements and impact.

  • Work closely with Application Programmers to assist in the creation of database schemas and estimate database capacities.

  • Responsible for final approval for all production Progress Database changes

  • Analyze overall physical database structures for data integrity, performance quality, recoverability, maintenance and space requirement considerations.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years Progress/Open Edge Database Administration version 10 or higher.

  • Experience with OE Replication, and management tools

  • Experience working in a Unix environment

  • Knowledge and proficiency with Open Edge ABL (4GL) code

  • Enabling the SQL Access and connections into Open Edge Databases

  • Knowledge of SQL, including programming and optimizing SQL code.

  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline and/or ten years of experience in database administration

  • Strong Unix Shell scripting abilities to automate database administration tasks
