Senior Manager, Innovation and Design Research

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Manager, Innovation and Design Research will focus on both strategic innovation leadership and the application of design research methodologies to enhance product and service offerings. They will oversee the end-to-end innovation process, working cross-functionally to ensure that new ideas are informed by deep customer insights and market trends. They will act as the main point of contact for the design research function of Innovation, with opportunities to lead other design researchers on the team. This will be a visible role to the SVP of Technology, Product and Innovation and act as a liaison between the business and the innovation team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Innovation Leadership:

  • Assist with the development of the innovation strategy aligned with Iron Mountain’s objectives, focusing on growth, operational efficiency, and digital transformation.

  • Identify emerging technologies, market trends, and customer needs to drive innovation in data management, information protection, and digital transformation services.

  • User-Centered Strategy & Design Research:

  • Guide the team with best practices on user research initiatives, to gather actionable insights that inform product development and service design.

  • Validate the team’s recommendation to translate research findings into clear, data-driven recommendations for new products, services, or process improvements that enhance user experience and business value.

  • Analyze and recommend process improvements to the overall innovation process within the organization.

  • Project Management & Execution:

  • Oversee the execution of innovation projects, applying design thinking, lean startup, and agile methodologies to test, iterate, and scale solutions.

  • Drive the prototyping and testing of new ideas, ensuring usability and customer feedback are integrated into final product designs.

  • Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Present innovation strategies, research insights, and project progress to senior leadership

  • Advocate for the value of design research in driving innovative solutions that meet customer and business needs.

  • Maintain relationships with external partners, such as research institutions, startups, and technology providers, to stay informed on cutting-edge developments in the information management space.

Experience:

  • 8-10 years of experience in innovation, product development, or design research, with 3-5 years in a leadership position.

  • Experience in leading user-centered research and applying insights to drive product innovation, ideally in information management, data protection, or related industries.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities with a passion for driving innovation and improving user experiences.

  • Expertise in innovation frameworks (e.g., design thinking, lean, agile) and user research methodologies (e.g., usability testing, ethnographic research).

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to present complex ideas and research findings to diverse audiences.

  • Strong curiosity with new tools, technologies and methods that push learning in new directions, reach users in new ways, inspire the design team and content, or compliment depth of insight with scale.

  • Exceptional communication and storytelling skills: fluency and confidence in inspiring teammates and business leaders with user-driven rationale; experience in not only telling stories but also translating insights into actionable ideas/design.

  • Comfort in using data to find and/or support a story is a plus. Ability to work flexibly and efficiently; exercising a balance between research rigor, extreme organizational skills, and leaving space for intuition and inspiration.

  • High comfort level in working within a self-directed culture and navigating ambiguity.

  • Experience teaching and/or mentoring design research skills.
