This position will be principally responsible for managing the construction and real estate legal work for Iron Mountain’s global data center business, including advising the regional management, design and construction, and site selection teams on legal matters and strategic questions; negotiating, preparing or vetting and resolving legal issues with respect to construction and design agreements, real estate purchase and sale transactions, and real estate-related agreements; and instructing and coordinating with external legal counsel in handling matters, including contentious disputes and claims related to the foregoing. The individual must act as a solid business partner, delivering high quality and commercially-focused legal advice, and collaborate with global legal team members, including reporting into the VP and Global Counsel, located in Boston, MA.
The Iron Mountain data center business currently serves the following markets: U.S., UK, Germany, Netherlands, India and Singapore.
The role is across business entities and geographies and includes:
Working with a diverse team of professionals across multiple functions, regions and time zones, and building collaborative relationships with global team members.
Leading the negotiating, drafting and vetting of the above types of agreements while managing multiple regional business transactions in accordance with approved contracting / governance / compliance practices.
Managing issues that arise with respect to real estate issues for leased and owned property, such as leasing, purchase sale agreement, easements, encroachments, environmental matters, and eminent domain.
Developing an understanding of Iron Mountain’s business and associated legal issues, including Iron Mountain preferred positions in contracting negotiations.
Working with Legal Operations to implement and follow the approved processes for selecting, instructing and managing external counsel, and monitoring all assignments effectively with appropriate reporting to the business and oversight of performance.
Developing strategies for handling legal issues in creative and business-centric ways; and building processes that address risk while allowing the business flexibility to move quickly.
Main internal and external contacts will be:
Data Center management team, including regional general managers
Global legal team, with regular contacts being the data center legal team and VP and Group Counsel
Design & Construction, Global Real Estate, Site Selection teams
Contractors, suppliers and landlords
Professionals – external law firms. counterparties’ lawyers, accountants/auditors, real estate and other technical consultants
JD degree or equivalent international degree admission in good standing to the Bar of any State
10+ years of legal experience
Strong knowledge of real estate and construction law, and the different practices in the various global markets.
Strong drafting and negotiating skills demonstrated.
Inhouse experience with a construction, real estate or technology company.
Consistently delivers timely results for multiple deals/projects with varying time pressures.
Proven success balancing legal positions with business objectives and the business acumen to provide practical advice on resolutions and business alternatives.
Flexibility, initiative and ability to prioritize work.
High degree of initiative with ability to work independently with little supervision and in a team environment.
Confidence in advising and influencing senior management, and ability to partner effectively with other corporate functions and senior leadership.
Mobility Requirements: National / International Travel, if necessary.
